Rejuvenating the UNICEF Delhi office

UNICEF has forever used striking imagery of children from all around the world in their communication inside or outside their premises. Rightly so they have always conjured up certain imagery of the organisation being very caring, focussed and of course child centric.

Designing for the UNICEF’s Delhi office was a challenging task of creating a professional, clean and fresh space without loosing on its brand recall.

There were a lot of limitations as to what kind of imagery and text that could be used for the designs. So we took UNICEF’s slogan of “unite for children” as our concept and point of departure and decided to keep it very simple by using the basic form of a square to create the convergence.

We wanted to create a unique installation for the reception area so we wrote the slogan of UNICEF through three layers of glass printed with tiny photos of kids, 'Fact for Life’ symbols and magenta coloured squares respectively on each glass.

Ground floor lobby: These squares could be replaced or their position interchanged as they were designed keeping modularity in mind. The wall has a vinyl with the Rights of the Child printed on it in really small yet legible font size and 2% black along with related keywords in larger, more abstract looking regional Indian scripts to visually contextualise it to India.

A closer look at the previous panel. We decided to use the images of kids but in single solid colours creating an overall strong vibrant visual.

Second floor lobby

Black and white images were used in the square format along with a Right and a ‘Fact for Life’ symbol in the passages near the work stations. Since these areas were more busy than the lobbies we decided to keep the squares smaller and the look more muted.

The designs for the mezannine floors at the back of the office were treated differently to create diversity. Also, given that these passages were not too wide, the designs were printed directly on vinyls and stuck on the wall to avoid any contact.

Room signage were especially manufactured for the UNICEF office. The names could be printed locally from the office printers and slid in as and when required making it cost effective (in the long run) and easy to replace when someone new would join in.
